We have measured the distribution and number of stopped π+ decays in a copper beam dump per incident proton of 720 MeV. The decay of stopped π+'s, and stopped μ+'s, produce neutrinos with well defined spectra. These decays provide neutrinos which are utilized in neutrino experiments at LAMPF. The present measurement, therefore, calibrates the LAMPF neutrino source intensity. We find that there are a total of 0.0571±0.0035 stopped π+ decays per incident 720 MeV proton. © 1979.
