SYNAPTIC PLASTICITY IN THE HIPPOCAMPUS

For many years part of the limbic system, the hippocampus, has been associated with memory. The discovery of cooperativity in the nerve fibres of this part of the brain, where long-term potentiation of synaptic transmission can be brought about by short-term changes in synaptic activity, now provides a possible physiological basis for at least some learning processes. Tim Bliss summarizes in this article our present knowledge in this area. © 1979.
