In this paper, Lie transform perturbation theory is used to examine the structure of resonances which occur in a linear oscillator perturbed by a plane wave. For rational wave frequencies of the form nu = r/s, where r and s are relatively prime integers, it is shown that sth order perturbation theory predicts the occurrence of intrinsic resonances. Explicit results and invariant functions are given for the cases s = 1 and s = 2.
