APPLICATION OF RECURRENCE RATE TECHNIQUES TO TURBULENCE ANALYSIS

The random arrival rate of flow-embedded particles measured in the detection volume of a laser anemometer can be processed exactly as the detection events in photon correlation spectroscopy. The relationship between the resultingparticle current correlation and the particle velocity and density correlation and structure functions in a turbulent field is analyzed. Experimental studies in jet flow and vortex flow are reported. When applied to fluid density inhomogeneities, the recurrence rate technique can be extended to scattered background light observed through hot flows. It is then possible to obtain a lag-free covariance function of the downstream turbulent velocity in a hot gas jet. © 1979 IOP Publishing Ltd.
