Supercritical fluids (SCFs), especially mixed solvents or those with entrainers, exhibit specific interactions that make them a very powerful media for separations. It is important to understand microscopic interactions between solutes and entrainers, as well as between two solute molecules, to develop predictive thermodynamic models of supercritical solutions. We present new fluorescence spectroscopy results of exciplex and excimer formation in SCF solutions and describe special considerations required in the analysis. The results indicate a significant solvent effect on the photophysical kinetics and the presence of solute/solute interactions in very dilute SCF solutions. © 1990 American Chemical Society.
