THE UV ALIGNMENT EFFECT IN A LOW-REDSHIFT RADIO GALAXY

We present the results of optical/near-UV imaging polarimetry of a small sample of low- to moderate-redshift radio galaxies. The main result is the discovery of the alignment effect in a low-redshift radio galaxy (3C 195 at z=0.1). The UV continuum of this galaxy appears extended and aligned with the radio axis, and its linear polarization is strong and perpendicular to the UV axis. The H alpha + [N II] emission is also extended and aligned with the radio axis. 3C 195 mimics the general UV properties observed in radio galaxies at high redshift. The tight correlation observed in powerful radio galaxies between the observed optical polarization and the redshift disappears if we fix the spectral region in the rest-frame UV, and is therefore mostly due to a K-correction effect.
