Within the plant kingdom, transmission of plastid genomes appears dissymetrical regarding to the maternal or paternal parent. Until now, Petunia was classified as a typical genus showing pure maternal inheritance of the plastids. However, an inbred line, Tb1-3, was discovered having the ability to transfer paternal plastids. The character, called Tp, appeared under nuclear control; however, it was expressed only if the male contribution was furnished by the Tb1-3 genotype. The first data allowed to conclude that the gene action was gametophytic. A double marked female receptor, by Yv (plastid mutation) and cms (linked to mitochondrial DNA) was pollinated with a cms maintainer Tp bearing genotype, in order to test eventual transfer of mitochondria. Two plants with small fertile sectors were obtained.
