HREM STUDY OF THE IODINE INTERCALATED SUPERCONDUCTING OXIDE IBI2SR2CACU2OY

The effect of the iodine intercalation on the structure of high Tc superconducting oxide Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 has been studied by high resolution electron microscopy. The iodine atoms intercalate in between the two Bi-O planes of the Bi2O2 layers, in a plane P(I) perpendicular to the c axis of the unit cell. A modulation is observed in this plane such that the major component of the iodine atoms displacement is parallel to the b axis. A model for the distribution of iodine and bismuth atoms in the average structure of IBi2Sr2CaCu2Oy, is presented.
