UNIFORMITY OF SOLIDS ON SMEARS OF MILK CONTAINING GLYCINE-2-14C AND ITS RELATION TO CELL DISTRIBUTION

Syringe Breed-type smears of milk containing glycine-2-14C were prepared. With an inherent counting variation of the detector of 1.3%, evaluation of the reproducibility of delivering 0.01 ml milk gave a sample coefficient of variation of 1.8% and a standard deviation of the mean of 4.24 counts per minute. These data support a high confidence in the precision of the syringe pipette sampling method. Measurement of the uniformity of the thickness of the smear by radiometric analysis across the smear revealed a curvilinear decrease of solids deposition from the periphery to the center. The distribution of bacteria and somatic cells was not influenced by the pattern of solids deposition but followed closely the Poisson distribution. © 1968, American Dairy Science Association.
