Boron nitride materials with surface areas of 53-696 m2/g and pore volumes 0.036-0.390 cm3/g have been produced by vacuum pyrolysis of poly(4,6-borazinylamine) polymerized under dilute conditions. These samples exhibit type I isotherms, indicating that a majority of the porosity occurs in pores of size less than 1.0 nm. The surface areas and pore volumes are maximized at pyrolysis temperatures of 800-degrees-C, and are essentially eliminated by 1200-degrees-C. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements confirm this change in structure with pyrolysis temperature.
