Birefringence of PLZT (9/65/35) is measured as a function of applied DC voltage. Hysteresis has been observed for the sample used. An experiment is conducted on the optical detection of acoustic pressure in liquid utilizing birefringence of PLZT (9/65/35). Linear dependence of the output signal on acoustic pressure has been observed for acoustic pressures from 146 to 181 dB re 1 muPa, and maximum sensitivity has been obtained at the optimum value of birefringence as predicted by calculations.
