INVESTIGATION OF FULVIC-ACID EXTRACTED FROM SEWAGE SLUDGE USING C-13 AND PROTON NMR-SPECTROSCOPY

Carbon-13 and proton NMR spectra were obtained for two representative fulvic acid samples that were extracted from anaerobically digested sewage sludges. The spectra gave evidence for significant amounts of both aliphatic and aromatic constituents, including products from the degradation of polysaccharides and proteins. The results suggested that sludge-derived fulvic acid is in a less oxidized state than fulvic acid extracted from naturally occurring soil organic matter. Carbon-13 NMR spectroscopy appears to be a useful means of characterizing fulvic acids and distinguishing these complex, water-soluble mixtures according to the origin and state of oxidation of the organic matter from which they are extracted. © 1978, American Chemical Society.
