Substituted phenols demonstrate an increase in the degree of adsorption onto cadmium sulfide with increasing substitution. No adsorption of the deprotonated phenolate species occurs. Decreasing the polarity of the solvent decreases the adsorption due to cosolvent effects. Adsorption density is correlated to the octanol/water coefficient of the phenol. It is concluded that the adsorption is the result of hydrophobic partitioning onto the solid, and no evidence for specific interactions is found except for the monosubstituted phenols. For most phenols, the adsorption can be modeled as a function of the octanol/ water partition coefficient. © 1990 American Chemical Society.
