PULMONARY COMPLICATIONS OF RUBELLA EMBRYOPATHY

The clinical and pathologic features of 6 infants with rubella embryopathy who died from the pulmonary complications of the disease are reported together with details of a seventh patient who has apparently recovered. The 7 patients presented with symptoms of cough and breathlessness between 1 and 6 months of age and had clinical and radiologic features of an interstitial pneumonitis. The lungs from the patients who died showed a spectrum of pathologic change from an acute generalized pneumonia with hyaline membrane formation to chronic interstitial pneumonitis; one had secondary infection with Pneumocystis carinii. © 1969 The C.
