PB0.3BI1.7CAXSR4-XCU3OY AND PB0.4BI1.6CAXSR4-XCU3OY SUPERCONDUCTORS FROM COPRECIPITATED OXALATE PRECURSORS

Pb0.3Bi1.7CaxSr4-xCu3Ox and Pb0.4Bi1.6CaxSr4-xCu3Oy superconductors were prepared via coprecipitation of the cations as oxalates from concentrated acetic acid. Almost complete precipitation (> 99.9%) of the cations could be obtained from this medium. Variations of x from 1.8 to 2.6 and in the sintering temperatures showed that almost pure 2223 phase superconductors could be obtained for x = 2.4 sintered in air at 850-degrees-C for 72 h. These samples had a T(c) (0) of 108 K and a critical current density of 36 A cm-2 at 77 K. Superconductors with x = 2 required longer calcination times for the preparation of pure 2223 phase. For x < 2, only the 2212 phase was obtained.
