GEL FORMATION IN AQUEOUS SYSTEMS OF A POLYANION AND AN OPPOSITELY CHARGED SURFACTANT

Gel formation in aqueous systems of a polyanion (the linear biological polysaccharide hyaluronan, Hy) and cationic surfactants of the alkyltrimethylammonium bromide type is reported and the physicochemical properties of gels located in different regions of the phase diagram are described. The gels have been investigated by H-1 NMR transverse relaxation and self-diffusion measurements. It is concluded that there are in the gels micellelike surfactant aggregates bound to the polyanion chains. Similar findings in systems of polyacrylate and a cationic surfactant indicate a generality of the reported phenomenon.
