Ex situ and in situ fluorescence studies of the electrochemical behaviour of electrosynthesized poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVCA) films are described. The reproducibility of the PVCA ex situ fluorescence signal is significantly improved when using a novel multielectrode electrochemical cell for the preparation of PVCA films. The effect of several electrolytes (TBAClO4, TBAPF6 and TBABF4) on the dry film growth and on the variation of ex situ PVCA fluorescence intensity is evaluated. A new spectrofluoroelectrochemical cell is designed for monitoring in real time the modulation of in situ PVCA fluorescence with the number of electrical pulses. The reversibility of the redox system PVCA-PVCA.+ is shown to depend of the type of counterion used.
