Coalescence of water in crude oil emulsions during the initial stages of demulsification can be followed by monitoring changes in the light scattering. Equipment for this purpose is described. One can either measure the transmitted light with a cuvette or the back-scattered light using a fibre optic reflection probe. Interactions between absorption and scattering in crude oil emulsions are discussed. By cross-linking an ethylene-oxide propylene-oxide block copolymer, the ability to cause coalescence at low concentrations can be improved. This correlates with the results of water separation tests.
