HEAT STROKE IN AGED

Heat stroke is a medical emergency which often afflicts the elderly person already beset with chronic debilitating disease. A high incidence of gram-negative and staphylococcal pulmonary infection and a state of dehydration in four such patients are described. The use of isoproterenol, a beta-adrenergic agent, is suggested in the treatment of hyperpyrectic patients in shock. The inability of the elderly patient to marshal defenses against heat illness because of prior compromise of the cardiovascular system is underscored. © 1969.
