The rate of lithium diffusion in the layered intercalation compound Li1-xNiO2 has been investigated. The variation of the chemical diffusion coefficient, D(Li), for lithium and the self diffusion coefficient, D(Li), for Li+ ions, with lithium content is presented. The maximum value for D(Li) = 2 x 10(-7) cm2 s-1 and is amongst the highest observed for a lithium intercalation compound. Within the composition range studied, 0.5 < (1 - x) < 1.0, the ions are transported by a vacancy mechanism. A vacancy diffusion coefficient, D(v), is defined and its variation with lithium composition described. In addition, large thermodynamic enhancement factors are observed.
