PHOTODISSOCIATION DYNAMICS OF 3-CYCLOPENTENONE USING A TUNABLE DIODE-LASER

Time-resolved infrared laser spectroscopy has been used to investigate the dynamics of the photodissociation of 3-cyclopentenone at 193 nm. A tunable diode laser serves as the probe in measuring the energy released to the vibrational, rotational, and translational degrees of freedom of the CO photofragment. This energy release can be characterized with the effective vibrational, rotational, and translational temperatures: T(v) = 2900 (200) K, T(r)(upsilon = 0) = 2890 (190) K, and T(t)(upsilon = 0, J = 18) = 2210 (220) K, respectively. The use of phase space theory suggests a mechanistic interpretation of these results.
