NUCLEATION AND WETTING NEAR-SURFACE SPINODALS

摘要
We discuss the nucleation of wetting layers starting from a metastable state. The classical theory of bulk nucleation near spinodals is extended to surface phases. In contrast with bulk nucleation, where spinodals are not observed, sharp spinodals may occur near first-order wetting transitions, because the upper critical dimension du<3. We find that near the spinodal of a first-order wetting transition the vanishing of the free energy of the critical droplet is described by the universal exponent (7-d)/4 in dimension d. Agreement with recent experimental data is satisfactory. © 1995 The American Physical Society.
