EFFECTS OF ORGANIC SOLVENTS ON TIN ABSORBANCE IN AN AIR-HYDROGEN FLAME

The effect of organic solvent on tin species in a fuelrich air-hydrogen flame has been studied. The presence of alcohols, ketones, and organic acids, even at low concentrations, has been shown to greatly reduce tin atomic absorbance. In general, the effect increases with carbon number and increased chain branching. Atomic absorbances of barium and magnesium are depressed in a manner similar to tin, while zinc and copper absorbances are enhanced by the organics. Population profiles were observed for tin atoms, tin hydride, and hydrogen atoms in the air-hydrogen flame, with and without organic solvents present. The organics appear to reduce the effective hydrogen atom population in the flame, producing a drop in the tin atomic population. © 1969, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
