A GAS-ACTUATED ACOUSTIC DILATOMETER FOR THERMAL EXPANSION MEASUREMENTS ON METALS

摘要
Thermal expansion properties of metals have been measured to five significant figures with a gas-actuated acoustic dilatometer, utilizing an X-cut quartz crystal driven at resonance by a 600 kHz signal. The technique has been demonstrated up to 450°C on type 304 steel and the results agree well with known characteristics of this metal. Planned extension of the method to higher temperatures (similar 1200°C) will require substitution of a tourmaline crystal whose Curie point lies above this range.
