VALENCE STATES OF COPPER IN ND2-XCEXCUO4-DELTA STUDIED BY X-RAY AND ULTRAVIOLET PHOTOELECTRON-SPECTROSCOPY

We have studied core level and valence band spectra of unreduced Nd2-xCexCuO4 (x = 0, 0.15) and reduced Nd2-xCexCuO4-δ(x = 0, 0.15) in order to explore the electronic changes associated with doping and reduction. We determine the valency of copper and the lanthanoides in the various compounds. A quantitative estimation of the CuI fraction from the Cu 2p 3 2 core level spectra yields 15% CuI for Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4 and 26% CuI for Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4-δ. The valence band spectra did not reveal features attributable to monovalent copper. © 1990.
