DECOMPOSITION OF ISOPROPANOL ON EUROCAT V2O5/TIO2 CATALYSTS

The decomposition of isopropanol on the Eurocat V2O5/TiO2 catalysts EL10V1 and EL10V8 has been studied with a flow technique in the temperature range 423-483 K (Laboratory F-3) and a pulse technique (Laboratory PL-1) at 443 K. The results obtained with the two techniques are in good qualitative agreement. It has been found that the rate of dehydrogenation to acetone is practically the same on the two catalysts, whereas the rate of dehydration to propene, considered as a measure of acidity, is higher for the V-rich EL10V8 catalyst. After treatment of the catalysts with ammonia or isobutanol, the vanadia species which are insoluble and are strongly bound to the support exhibit only dehydrogenating properties, propene formation being drastically reduced.
