Steric considerations show that a 1:1 mixture of a stearyl substituted monomethin cyanine dye and a long chain hydrocarbon should form a closely packed monolayer with the chromophores arranged like a brick stone work. In such arrangement the narrow absorption and fluorescence band typical for Scheibe dye aggregates should appear. This is actually found in several cases and the monomer to aggregate band shifts agree with the expectation.
