HISTOPATHOLOGICAL PICTURE OF CENTRAL CHORIORETINAL CHANGES IN SUBACUTE SCLEROSING LEUKOENCEPHALITIS (VAN BOGAERT)

In 3 eyes of 2 patients with SSLE (subacute sclerosing leucoencephalitis) in the retina an atrophic area of about 2 mm diameter was found at the macula. Here retina was changed to a thin glial membrane. At the edges of those lesions pigment grains and hyalin masses were accumulated with few plasmatic cells. In the inner nuclear layer and in the ganglion cells layer structurless eosinofilic bodies were found, staining vividly red with phloxin. Authors think they may be inclusion bodies. Within the area of retinal lesion the choroid is also thin and changed. The Bruch membrane is partially missing or is thickened and fragmented. Choriocapillaris is missing or very reduced. © 1969 S.
