2-METHYLAMINO PYRIDINE N-OXIDE COMPLEXES FORMED FROM COPPER (II) SALTS

Complexes derived from CuXn (n = 2, X = ClO4-, BF4-, NO3-, Cl- and Br-; n = 1, X = SO42) and 2-methylaminopyridine N-oxide (HL) using 6:1, 4:1, 3:1 and 2:1 ligand to copper(II) mole ratios have been prepared. IR, electronic and ESR spectra used to characterize the complexes indicate a planar arrangement of four N-oxide oxygens around the Cu(II) center is favored when the preparative ligand to metal ion mole ratio was high, except when X = Cl. Both bidentate formation involving the amine function with the N-oxide group and anion coordination occurs when the ligand to metal ion ratio is low. The complexes decompose upon dissolution in many organic solvents limiting the characterization to solid-state techniques. © 1979.
