Growth of rainbow trout, at first analysis, appears to bc easily understood and simple to measure. However, closer examination reveals that it is a highly complex phenomenon, not easily quantified, and confused by the indeterminant and flexible nature of trout growth. This review summarizes what is known about environmental, genetic, and endogenous factors influencing growth, with particular attention to physiological processes. There are many different factors that can affect growth of rainbow trout. There is a reasonable amount of information available on environmental factors, including nutrition, but there is limited understanding of the endogenous control of growth and the multitude of interactions between the various environmental, genetic and endogenous factors.
