SUB-NATURAL LINEWIDTH RESOLUTION OF 22S1/2 AND 22P1/2 LEVEL-CROSSINGS OF HYDROGEN IN A MAGNETIC-FIELD

A pulse technique is used to resolve completely the two crossings Delta mI=0 of the states 22S1/2(mJ=-1/2) and 22P1/2(mJ=+1/2) of hydrogen. The technique is very similar to the well known Ramsey method. However, time-separated electric fields of zero frequency are used in place of the spatially-separated oscillatory Ramsey fields. Due to interference narrowing a linewidth less than the natural width can be observed. The application of this method to a precision measurement of the Lamb shift is discussed.
