摘要
Reports on the scholastic characteristics associated with both high school dropouts and poorly performing graduates. Extensive analysis of the academic histories of 270 students from elementary through secondary school, using pattern analysis and nonparametric techniques, revealed that most poorly performing students could be identified as early as the 3rd grade; dropouts began failing somewhat later than poorly performing graduates; early English language problems are critical; early failures in 1 or 2 areas frequently spread later to other areas; and certain early performance patterns are associated with later dropout. Conclusions are that remedial programs in the very early grades may improve student quality; assistance in junior high school could decrease the number of dropouts; and measures designed to decrease the dropout rates of high schools should begin prior to high school and focus on a combination of academic assistance, counseling, and possible home visitation.
