Although the general principle and structure of the power system stabilizer (PSS) for supplementary control have long been established, the best siting of, and choice of the parameters in, the PSS call for design ingenuity and effort when used in multimachine systems. Reported is the experience obtained of PSS optimization through the application and development of techniques of modal eigenvalue-sensitivity analyses. Simultaneous consideration is given to damping both the inter-area mode and the local mode in the optimization strategy. A fresh look at the basis for selecting the lead/lag compensation stages is described.
