1. 1. Convex, von Bertalanffy-type, length-at-age curves were similar in shape to length-at-weight curves in some fish species for which unvalidated techniques based on otolith check rings were used to age fish. 2. 2. Validated length-at-age curves from some fish species were not similar to length-at-weight curves. 3. 3. Otolith check rings in some species of fish may provide valuable information about the pattern of weight changes in individual fish, rather than their age. © 1990.
