INCOHERENT-TO-COHERENT OPTICAL-IMAGE CONVERTER OF TRANSMISSION TYPE USING BI12SIO20 SINGLE-CRYSTALS

This paper describes a reusable incoherent-to-coherent optical image converter of the transmission type. The device consists of mica sheets as insulating layers, transparent electrodes, andtwo wedge-shaped Bi12SiO20(BSO) single crystals. The undesirable effects introduced by the birefringence of the mica sheet and the change of optical activity with the thicknessof the BSO slab are analyzed theoreticaly and shown experimentally. These effects are compensatedfor by using an additional BSO slab as a compensator. The dynamic range of the readout signal and theFraunhofer diffraction patterns obtained by this compensated device are compared with those obtained by an uncompensated device. The other optical performances of the compensated device which arecomparable to those of the reflection-type device, are also shown. © 1979 IOP Publishing Ltd.
