A series of chiral ferrocenylamine sulfides and selenides and their complexes of Group X metals of type (S, R)-(η5-C5H3-1-CHMeNMe2-2-ER)Fe(η5-C5H5)MCl2 and (S, R)-(η5-C5H3-1-CHMeNMe2-2-ER)Fe(η5-C5H4ER)MCl2, (E = S, Se; M = Ni, Pd and Pt; R = Me, Et, n-Pr, i-Pr, n-Bu, t-Bu, i-Pent, Bz, Ph, 4-Cl-Ph and 4-tolyl have been prepared. Their application as homogeneous catalysts in Grignard cross-coupling reactions of 1-chloro-1-phenylethane with allylmagnesium chloride has been examined. This paper presents the first use of Ni and Pt thioether and selenoether complexes as catalysts for cross-coupling reactions that give high chemical yields (92-97%) and enantiomeric excesses up to 45%. However, Pd complexes showed their superiority for selective hydrogenation, giving up to quantitative conversion and 100% selective hydrogenation of cyclooctadiene and cyclohexadiene to cyclooctene and cyclohexene respectively. © 1990.
