EFFECT OF THE WATER-CONTENT OF ORGANIC FLUIDS ON THE AGGLOMERATION OF GLASS PARTICLES

Spherical agglomeration involves the agglomeration of particles suspended in an organic liquid agglomerated using water as the binding liquid. The water content of the organic medium influences the agglomeration behavior of the suspended particles. Experiments were carried out with two fractions of glass particles (x(P) less-than-or-equal-to 50-mu-m and x(P) less-than-or-equal-to 210-mu-m) in CCl4 and CHCl3 as suspension liquids. First, the time-dependent curve of water adsorption on the glass particles and the resulting flocculation behavior were observed. These experimental observations were then compared with the results of Schubert on the stability of liquid bridges between particles. Additional investigations on the spherical agglomeration of glass particles in these media were carried out with water as binding liquid. The duration of the wetting step for saturated suspension liquid is compared with that for analytically pure medium.
