Variable concentrations of [I14C] linoleic acid and [I14C] eicosa-8,11,14-trienoic acid were incubated with liver microsomes in a medium containing the necessary cofactors for fatty acid desaturation. The conversion of linoleic into γ-linolenic acid and eicosatrienoic into arachidonic acid were mutually inhibited and the inhibition depended on the concentration of the fatty acids incubated. © 1969 The American Oil Chemists' Society.
