HPLC AND GC METHODS FOR ANALYSIS OF WATER-SOLUBLE NITROSULFONIC ACIDS

Two methods are reported for the analysis of nitrobenzene and nitrotoluene sulfonic acids. An ion-pairing solvent system containing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide for high-performance liquid chromatography is described; the method uses ultraviolet detection and nonpolar styrenedivinylbenzene columns. A gas chromatographic method that involves converting the sulfonic acid to an alkylamine derivative with a nucleophilic displacement reaction is also related. The latter method is most useful for highly nitrated compounds. © 1994 Oxford University Press.
