ORGANIZATION OF SUBDURAL HEMATOMAS - A CONTRIBUTION TO SO-CALLED IDIOPATHIC PACHYMENINGEOSIS HAEMORRHAGICA INTERNA

Because of the results of studies made with the hand lens and light microscope of the organization of subdural hematomas, the concept of idiopathic pachymeningeosis haemorrhagica interna must be rejected. The encapsulated hematoma of the dura mater with its charakteristic vascularized membranes represents a subdural hematoma. The reason it becomes enclosed by vascularized membranes, in our opinion, is to be found either in an disturbance of blood coagulation initiated elsewhere or in a secondary fibrinolysis. In either instance, due to deficiency in stabilized fibrin, organization becomes impossible. The encapsulated hematoma may develop from trauma. © 1969 Springer-Verlag.
