Low porosity ceramics with O prime -sialon as the major crystalline phase have been fabricated by pressureless sintering. Densification at 1400 to 1800 degree C is interpreted using Kingery's liquid phase sintering model. Particle rearrangement accounts for a significant proportion of the overall densification and is related to the amount and viscosity of the liquid present. The oxidation resistance of fabricated samples is good but at temperatures above 1300 degree C it decreases with increasing alumina content in the starting mix. Modulus of rupture values of about 420 MPa at room temperature are high enough to encourage further work.
