1. 1. In populations of Tetrahymena pyriformis, synchronized for cell divisions by heat treatment, the inhibitory action of p-dl-fluorophenylalanine and l-lysine on the first synchronous division increases in the presence of sodium chloride in the suspension fluid. 2. 2. The rate of uptake of amino acids depends upon the sodium concentration in the medium. 3. 3. Addition of l-phenylalanine to a culture causes a net increase in cellular sodium content. 4. 4. Our results permit the suggestion that interactions between amino acids and sodium chloride are mutual. © 1969.
