EXCITONS AND INFRARED-SPECTROSCOPY OF ADLAYERS ON IONIC SURFACES

摘要
Infrared spectroscopy of ordered molecular adlayers on ionic substrates often reveals structured absorption bands with unusually sharp features. This rich spectroscopy can be interpreted by exciton theory. Using the example of CO on NaCl(100), we show how the molecular arrangement within the adlayer, temperature dependent geometry changes, and domain size can be revealed by application of exciton theory. Interpretation of the spectroscopy of other systems by exciton theory is also briefly discussed.
