CHEMISORPTION REACTIONS OF DIISOPROPYLMETHYL PHOSPHONATE WITH TRANSITION METAL SALTS

The effect of temperature on the chemisorption reactions of diisopropylmethyl phosphonate (DIMP) with a series of inorganic transition metal salts, FeCl3, VCl3, CuCl2, and HgCl2, has been studied over the range 25-140°. The nature and degree of interaction of the gas with the solid was determined by infrared spectroscopy. The heat of adsorption of each complex was calculated from the resulting data. Large shifts in the absorbance frequency of the P-O bond of DIMP due to complex formation and high ΔH values indicate strong chemisorption reactions in the case of FeCl3 or VCl3. Large shifts in frequency were observed for the complexes with CuCl2 or HgCl2, but low ΔH values are obtained indicating moderate chemisorption reactions.
