Room temperature deformation behavior of CoSi2 single crystals as well as polycrystals has been investigated in compression. The [001] oriented single crystals and polycrystals fractured before yielding without showing any evidence of plastic deformation, while [011], [111], [123BAR] and [135BAR] oriented single crystals exhibited appreciable fracture strains of about 2%-4% after a yield drop. Optical and transmission electron microscopy of the deformation structures revealed that the activated slip systems in the latter crystals are {001}[100]. Most dislocations were observed to be of edge orientation. The yield drop and the alignment of dislocations along the edge orientation strongly suggest that plastic deformation of CoSi2 by {001}[100] slip is controlled by the Peierls mechanism.
