Administered the Omnibus Personality Inventory (OPI) to entering freshmen (N = 91-703), after the 1st yr. (N = 19-75), and the 2nd (N = 18-101). Institutional differences were revealed by College Goals Rating Sheet, the College and University Environment Scales, and campus visits. Institutional means for entering students ranged across 2 standard deviations for several OPI scales and factors. Test-retest data indicate: (1) most change in autonomy, impulse expression, estheticism, and practical orientation, and least change in intellectual interests, social extroversion, and altruism; (2) for both men and women; (3) irrespective of mean score at entrance; (4) for all colleges. More detailed analyses of subgroups (commuters vs. residents) and of more particular variables (college role orientation) revealed differential change related to characteristics of colleges and entering students.
