摘要
Utilizing data provided by a large, controlled copper-bearing waste body leaching experiment, a natural, thermophilic microorganism was isolated by subculturing from this waste body. This microorganism was observed by both scanning and transmission electron microscopy to differ in form and structure from T. ferrooxidans, and to have a cell wall about half as thick and considerably less complicated than that of T. ferrooxidans. Laboratory tests with the isolated thermophile have shown it to be functional at 55°C and to catalyze the leaching of copper. The thermophile also effectively oxidizes Fe25+ to Fe3+. Comparison of the laboratory leaching data involving the isolated thermophile with large scale waste body leaching data suggests that the temperature optima observed in the large waste column could be related to the functional limitations of the thermophile. © 1979 American Society for Metals and the Metallurgical Society of AIME.
