The purpose of our study was to determine the effectiveness of the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) as a screening instrument in a population of patients whose primary diagnoses usually did not include alcoholism. The MAST was administered to 76 in-patients on an adult, general psychiatric ward of a university-affiliated mental health center. In addition to two general psychiatric wards, the center has a substance-abuse ward to which most patients with a primary diagnostic of alcoholism and/or drug abuse are admitted. © 1979.
