The results of the objective olfactometry and of the anterior rhinomanometry are compared. An insufficient nasal respiration is always associated with a nonexistent or reduced olfactorian function. The amplitudes of the olfactory evoked potentials registrated in 54 examinations showed no significant dependability to the degree of slight or strong handicapped nasal breathing. The intensity-amplitude function with its Stevens-exponent is shown in 15 normal persons. The amplitudes by persons with hyposmia are significantly lower than in normal persons. The amplitude range in high degree hyposmia is overlapping the range of anosmia. © 1979 Springer-Verlag.
