POULTRY BY-PRODUCT MEAL AS A DIETARY-PROTEIN SOURCE IN FALL CHINOOK SALMON DIETS

Juvenile fall chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) were fed diets containing poultry by-product meal (PBM) at levels of 0, 10, 20, and 30% by replacement of fish meal in a practical production formulation for a period of 20 weeks at a constant water temperature of 12-degrees-C. Weight gains and feed efficiencies were no different in fish fed the diet with 20% PBM from those in fish fed the diet with 0% PBM. Feeding a diet with 30% PBM impaired growth and feed efficiency. Gill adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activity, plasma thyroxine, and plasma sodium regulation after a 24-h seawater challenge were not affected by dietary variations. Starvation for 1 to 3 weeks adversely affected ATPase, plasma sodium regulation, and condition factor. A decreased condition factor was correlated with plasma sodium level in fish held for 24 h in seawater.
